Getting paddled in Nashville

Nashville isn't just about the honky-tonks and hot chicken, you know. Beneath the buzz of Broadway, a different kind of rhythm flows – the gentle current of the Cumberland River. I recently traded my boots for a paddle and my cowboy hat for a life vest to experience Music City from a whole new perspective: in a kayak!

It's been close to 10 years since I'd been kayaking and it certainly wasn't through a city. It was out on open water and truly an intimidating experience. With River Queen Voyages in Nashville, it was incredibly easy to get the hang of it on the near-still waters of the Cumberland River.

Annie, aka the River Queen, gave me a quick refresher before we were off and on our way. It's not a difficult activity. She was guiding me along the way, especially when a boat came speeding in our direction and only slowed down as it approached which rocked us around a little but thankfully there was no tipping or wetness.

The moment I pushed off from the shore, a sense of calm washed over me. The city noises faded slightly, replaced by the soft splash of my paddle and the gentle lapping of water against the kayak. Looking up, the iconic Batman Building loomed large, a stark contrast against the cloudy gloomy sky. The riverbanks were surprisingly lush, dotted with trees and the occasional heron patiently waiting for its lunch.

Annie was fantastic, sharing historical tidbits and pointing out landmarks I'd only ever seen from land. We paddled past Nissan Stadium, imagining the roar of the crowd on game day, and got a unique view of the pedestrian bridge connecting downtown to East Nashville. It was incredible to see the city from this vantage point, feeling so connected to the river that winds its way through its heart.

The Cumberland River kayak experience was more than just a sightseeing tour; it was a chance to connect with nature, escape the city's hustle, and see Nashville in a completely new light. If you're looking for a unique and memorable adventure, I highly recommend grabbing a paddle and exploring the Cumberland. Trust me, you won't regret it.

Just remember to wear sunscreen (yes, even on a cloudy day), bring plenty of water, and be prepared to be amazed! You might even discover a new appreciation for this vibrant city and the river that runs through it.
